Avionics Upgrades That Add Long Term Value

By Sparkchasers on September 5, 2022

When it comes to upgrading your aircraft avionics, there are a few key areas that you should focus on in order to improve both the aircrafts usefulness and safety and add long term value to your investment.

Fix Inoperative Instruments

Inoperative instruments are a distraction to the pilot and a potential source of confusion. Inoperative instruments should be fixed or covered and labeled “in-op”.

Fill Immediate Goals

Something as simple as adding a couple of USB outlets into the panel can go a long way in making your flight more comfortable and efficient.

Or, if you're looking for something more complex, adding a touchscreen PFD or a new autopilot can really take your plane to the next level.

No matter what kind of avionics upgrade you're considering, be sure to ask yourself how it will improve your flying experience in the here and now. After all, an upgrade that meets your immediate needs is an upgrade that will pay dividends for years to come.

Define Your Goals

It's important to be strategic when you're thinking about upgrading your airplane. You don't want to just start adding random components without considering how they will work together.

For example, if you're thinking about adding a new touchscreen navigator, you might be tempted to just add the Garmin unit because they're awesome, right? But which navigator is right for you will depend on your other components and the interoperability that is required.

If you have a panel of solid avionics that aren't Garmin and you don't plan to do a full upgrade then the Avidyne IFD may well be the better solution. Your goals matter.

Consult With an Avionics Dealer

Before you start tearing into your aircraft's avionics, it's a good idea to consult with an expert. A qualified avionics dealer can help you plan your upgrade and make sure you're using the right equipment.

Even if you're experienced with avionics, it's important to remember that every aircraft is different.

You might be surprised at how small differences can make big improvements in the way systems are integrated. So don't be afraid to ask questions and get guidance from the pros.
